In the fashion world, where trends constantly evolve, there's a prevailing notion that the true cost of creating a garment differs significantly from its retail price. This belief leads to undervaluing the clothes we purchase and distorts our perception of the production expenses of crafting high-quality apparel. That's why we decided to explain the cost of investing in quality clothes.
How much does fabric cost, and why?
We kickstart our creative process by choosing quality Naia™ fabric. It's made in Italy from pine and eucalyptus with yarn from the United States. The fabric is gentle on the skin, breathable, lightweight, and comfortable. So, customers looking for these fabric qualities in their clothing get an added benefit.
Naia™ fabric starts at just €9 per meter. Take, for example, our GRETES Dream No.1 Sleep Pants, which require three meters of this fabric for each pair.
Where does production take place, and why does it cost so much?
This fabric, with its texture closely resembling silk, requires skilled hands. Creating the garment you see on the shelves involves sketching designs, pattern drafting, and multiple trial fittings. At least three fitting sessions are typically conducted before the final product emerges. As a result, the production cost for a single pair of Sleep Pants amounts to approximately €21. We collaborate with a small sewing place in Kėdainiai. However, it would be incorrect to assume that sewing services in smaller Lithuanian towns are cheaper. Our primary focus has always been on quality. While large factories and small sewing studios offer services, the quality and commitment to fulfilling obligations may not always be consistent.
At first, it may seem that we could pay less for sewing services. However, behind the cost of sewing lies the wages and taxes paid to the individuals who sew the garments. There is often a stereotype that the seamstress profession should be poorly paid. However, to master intricate fabrics, sewists, and tailors spend years honing their craft, accumulating experience and knowledge. While it is celebrated that famous brands produce their goods in Lithuania, the reasons behind this choice are only sometimes explored. Unfortunately, Lithuania is known for its low-cost labor in the clothing manufacturing market.
What comes with your purchase?
We aim to create an emotional connection with our customers, so we pay attention to how GRETES clothes are packaged and presented. Our packaging process involves using eco-friendly materials made entirely from recycled paper, eliminating the use of plastic. We have calculated that all packaging elements for a single product cost approximately €3.8. Each order is carefully packaged in our studio and sent from Lithuania. Including international customers, particularly in the United States, the average shipping cost for foreign orders is around €20.
How much is retained for the brand?
In this case, we discussed our first Dream No.1 collection Sleep Pants, priced at €109.99 on the GRETES website. After considering all costs, the average production expense for these pants is €87, leaving €20 for the company. These funds cover employee salaries, advertising, and future projects.
As we explore the fashion world, we've realized that the value of clothing goes beyond short-lived trends. Our commitment to quality materials and responsible production enhances the value of well-crafted garments. Customers are increasingly recognizing this dedication and making conscious fashion choices.
